Job Description

Will lead the bioinformatics and biostatistics for the newly-formed Molecular Diagnostics Unit.

Major Accountabilities:

The Head of Bioinformatics & Biostatistics will be responsible for leading all bioinformatics/biostatistics efforts within the Molecular Diagnostics Unit. Since the Unit is newly formed, major responsibilities include staffing the bioinformatics/biostatistics group and overseeing the acquisition of compute infrastructure and key software applications. The Head will work with scientists from R&D, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, Technology Assessment, Quality and Business Development to gather data analysis and software requirements, develop strategies to meet requirements and oversee the successful implementation of those strategies. The Head will also serve as a key advisor for evaluating potential collaboration and acquisition opportunities. The Head is expected to maintain a hands-on role and will be an active participant in data analyses and software development.

  • Recruit and hire bioinformatics/biostatistics group members in accordance with staffing plans
  • Oversee the deployment of compute infrastructure and key software applications
  • Provide data analysis support of MDx projects and ensure that all milestones and key deliverables are met
  • Build databases and software tools to facilitate Unit objectives
  • Leadership and analysis on due diligence activities

Manages all bioinformatic needs of the organization to allow decisions on biomarkers (External or internal) for Dx test development.

Minimum requirements

Education:
Minimum – MS, Desirable – PhD

Experience:
Minimum – 8 years , Desirable – 10 years.

Management experience:
Minimum – 4 years, Desirable – 6 years. In vitro diagnostics experience essential.

Specific Professional Competencies:

  • Must have proven proficiency in common statistical and data mining techniques used in analyzing biological data.
  • Must have experience using R, Matlab, Spotfire, Partek or similar data analysis software.
  • Proficiency in developing applications in high-level (Java, C++, C#) and scripting (Perl, Python, Ruby) programming languages to accomplish bioinformatics tasks. Familiarity with web frameworks such as Rails or Django is highly desirable.
  • Experience using relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle or PostgreSQL
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools and databases such as the NCBI and UCSC Genome Browser, BLAST, Primer3, GEO and BioConductor
  • Knowledge of pathway analysis and tools such as Ingenuity Pathway Analysis and GeneGo’s MetaCore is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with assay development and common laboratory techniques is highly desirable.
  • Good understanding of molecular biology and diagnostic development is highly desirable.
  • Must have excellent communication and presentation skills.
